Our History
New York 811 is a remarkable nonprofit organization that has been providing its services since 1990. The organization plays an indispensable role as a communications link between utility companies and individuals who plan to dig in the five boroughs of New York City and Nassau and Suffolk Counties on Long Island. By relaying the requests, New York 811 helps safeguard the one of the most extensive, complicated, and congested underground infrastructures in the nation.
It is vital to note that while New York 811 doesn’t physically mark underground utility lines and facilities, it relays digging and excavation requests to the member network that owns or operates the underground utility lines in the area. This member network includes cable television, natural gas, electric, water, sewer, and telecommunications companies that ensure that all digging activities are done safely.
The organization is also committed to promoting safe digging, and it devotes significant time and resources to presentations, special events, partnerships, public education, and outreach. The ultimate goal is to ensure that individuals understand the importance of safe digging and excavation, and it highlights the risks and dangers associated with underground facilities.
